Hexagons vs Triangles

While working towards an art project involving portraiture based on Kinect point clouds, I returned to an old idea of using hexagons instead of triangles. The goal of this project was to find some way to use analog printing techniques to produce an image created from a digital process.

I also wanted to have a way to take the initial image as a scan and then rotate the final result to get the best pose after the fact.

I was also going to use multiple Kinects to be able to get a full scan at one time.

This project has not been without it's mishaps, although I did learn new techniques for moving Kinects around a space, a visual method for moving the pointclouds instead of moving the Kinects as I had done during my Thesis project.

I also explored some of the alternative methods for adding complexity to the hexagons without the need for gathering more information from the images. This one uses depth of field algorithms to blur the background so it is less distracting to the foreground.

While I have not decided on the final outcome, the technique is sound enough to begin applying for grants. They are a proof of concept. While I may use normal digital printing, I would like to eventually explore analogue photo techniques, such as tintype or, perhaps, a laser-writing technique onto photographic paper. My end goal is, personally, to be able to do intaglio prints based on these images. With a properly recorded point cloud one can do a number of things to get a pose, as well as depict the points/triangles or hexagons from that pose.

It's a new way to take portraits, and I would very much like to continue the project so it is within a working public prototype of a 'photo booth' setup.
